May is Stroke Awareness Month

As an American Heart Association-Stroke Ambassador, I want to share some vital information with you;

Did you know that stroke is the No. 3 killer of Minnesotans and the No. 1 cause of serious long-term disabilities?  You may have known those scary statistics, but most Minnesotans do not.  Furthermore, 2 in 5 adults cannot identify any symptoms of a stroke.

Thanks to Governor Dayton and Secretary of State Ritchie, more Minnesotans will be more aware of the risks and symptoms for stroke.

The warnings signs of a stroke can include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
